Feb 6Make a bias skirt and top by Paula Matthews.

Paula will demonstrate the steps of making a simple bias top and skirt like the ones she's wearing below. Students can bring supplies to follow along and sew. Those who don't want to sew can learn how to do it later.

Sample garments will be on display to help people figure out what dimensions to cut.

Both the top and skirt are easy to make on a serger but regular sewing machines work very well too.
Supply List:
  • BSS & sewing machine or serger.
  • Garment Fabrics - Choose a woven fabric that drapes. Rayon batiks work great and stripes are fun to work with.
    • Top: 1 5/8 yard of one fabric or 1 yd main fabric and 5/8 yd. contrast fabric.
    • Skirt - your personal measurement: Determine finished length and double that. For example, if skirt has a finished length of 25", then buy 50"
      of fabric.
  • Optional
    • Contrasting serger thread
    • Piping - 7 yards
    • Lace

For questions, call Paula Matthews. Ph: 232-3796.

Mar 5 – Lydia Winkler (seen at right) will lead a group project to construct a top. Hers came out so graceful and pretty, NG members asked her to teach them how to create the same!

Come make the Silhouette Pattern top (#211, Nina’s top) from the Peggy Sagers' designer line. Buy the pattern online or call Lydia Winkler about how to get it locally. Lydia can be reached at 579-1778.

Ten patterns were purchased to be handed out at the Feb meeting to those requesting them. Bring $15.40 (cash or check) to pay Lydia for their cost.

Supplies for making the top:

  • Any two-way 45” stretch knit fabric: 3 yards or if 60" wide, 2 yards.
  • Matching thread.
  • Hem tape (for stabilizing shoulder seams)
  • BSS & Sewing Machine or Serger (set Serger to a 4-thread overlock).

Prior to class, cut the pattern out from your fabric according to size. That will give you more time and allow you to finish the jacket or vest (except for the hem) by the end of the meeting. You can finish the hem at home with a sewing machine if constructing the garment with a serger.
