Chemotherapy Caps

Chemo Caps: The Tucson ASG Chapter has an ongoing support mission making much-needed Chemo turbans for cancer patients who have lost their hair. Teaming up with the AZ Oncology Foundation and the American Cancer Society, the Chapter held their first sew-a-thon in January 2011. Over 50 participants made more than 300 caps that day.
In the News: Prior to that event, the Chapter was offered a 15-minute non-profit publicity spot on a local KGUN TV show, The Morning Blend. It was a chance to promote the chemo turban mission to the community. Chapter President Sandy Younker-Hellman and founding president Connie Curtis presented a great overview that got the Chapter noticed. Later, other Chapter officials appeared a second time on the same show. The expanded publicity fostered community donations of fabric and money to support the cause.

The local city newspaper AZ Daily Star brought in a team on the first sewing day to cover this event. There was also a one-minute blurb on the local news network about the January Sew-a-Thon. It seemed that the Chemo Cap outreach mission was a hot topic city-wide.

The Chapter plans to continue organized sewing events to help ensure a steady supply of turbans. Members may also work alone or in small groups to continue the effort. Fabrics and patterns are provided to those interested in helping.
Anyone wanting to support this program should contact Dawn Rataczak at the AZ Oncology Foundation(cell) 520-275-6616. The people who work in the Chemo Cap area can provide the best advice on fabric characteristics and construction methods for making the caps. Sewing machine seaming is preferred over sergers.
