Superstar Volunteers in Charity Outreach

Yolanda Niemann moved to Tucson in 2006. After settling in Saddlebrooke, she joined a local community sewing club and eventually, ASG. She soon established herself as a superstar by producing all types of outreach projects. She routinely makes hundreds of items for several surrounding charity organizations and amazes the members of her sewing group with all that she does.
Dresses and skirts go to the Saddlebrooke Kid's Closet. Each dress creation is one-of-a-kind, embellished with lace, trims, or machine embroidery. Yolanda goes out of her way to make each dress treasured by the wearer. She says she has never seen a child wearing her creations but has been told the colors and special touches bring joy and confidence to the children who wear them.

For deployed military members, Yolanda has made hundreds of cool ties, helmet coolers and warmers, and toiletry bags. Veterans associations get lap robes.

She donates tote bags and pillowcases by the hundreds to the Sheriff's Department. Often she adds cloth toys, blankets and quilts. Sometimes the Sheriff's Department passes these items on to women's shelters. All of these items are geared toward comforting kids and families in crisis situations.

.

Hats are another passion of hers and she has managed to recruit more than twenty hat-makers from her sewing friends.

Yolanda seems to have a never-ending supply of energy with charity sewing at the top of her "to-do" list! However, she refuses to take all the credit for her accomplishments. Her crafts and talents may bring noteworthy fame, but Yolanda makes sure others understand that her work wouldn't be possible without donated items, fabrics and team efforts from surrounding community members. She's the first person many people call when they have fabrics or notions to donate!

Yolanda's enthusiasm inspires others to use their sewing talents to participate in outreach. The numbers of donated items from the Saddlebrooke Sewing Club have multiplied tremendously since Yolanda came their way.

In Nov 2011, she was singled out in the Explorer, a local NW newspaper for "being a star in community service." The focus of the article was describing her most recent contribution of 45 skirts and tops and 80 pillowcases—all made in less than a month!

Yolanda's husband and friends are all proud of her accomplishments. She sets a shining example on ways to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate.

Marilyn Pollitt is a life-long sewer and registered nurse. She is employed part-time at Casa De Los Ninos, a Tucson AZ shelter for abused or neglected children. Both her work and much of her personal time are infused with a passion to make the world a better place for disadvantaged kids. When Marilyn relocated to Green Valley, AZ, she voiced an interest in making clothes for Barbie dolls. Her husband suggested she just make dresses for little girls, since the need was much greater south of the border.
Marilyn has encouraged and built a network of support sewing buddies from ASG members who attend the Green Valley /
Sahuarita Neighborhood Group meetings. Besides their normal monthly sewing meeting, Marilyn set up one Tuesday a month from 9am - 2pm where women gather to just sew for Marilyn! The majority of the items made on "Marilyn's day" are clothes for smaller children, sizes 2-8. Stuffed toys, toiletry and tote bags are also sewn. Kits are put together with fabric, buttons, ribbon, etc. to make one dress or one boy's shirt. Others can take home what they can handle and bring them back completed.

The crafted items are mostly donated to the Crossroads Nogales Mission or St. Andrews Clinic in Nogales, AZ. Sometimes Marilyn adds requested adult-sized garments when there is a critical need.

On the right is Marilyn delivering piles of blankets, stuffed bears and infant attire to Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales, AZ. Their OB Department handles over 900 deliveries a year and the need for infant clothing and blankets for poor families is never-ending.

Marilyn's main passion is to make pretty dresses for little girls. They're all different, well made, and decorated with frills and lace to make the wearer feel special. Materials are both purchased by Marilyn and donated, with Walmart leading the way in donated fabrics.

Marilyn is always looking for donated corduroy and eyelet lace. The corduroy is sturdy and withstands wear well. The eyelet lace is one of her favorite trims for dresses, especially those made from donated piecework quilts!

In April 2011, Marilyn was featured in the Green Valley News & Sun Newspaper and named a "remarkable, dedicated lady." The article told her story of supporting the Nogales Mission each year at Easter and Christmas. Marilyn asks, "Why shouldn't little girls from poor Mexican families have a nice dress to wear for Easter?"

It's clear that people like Marilyn are valued beyond words! There's no trade-off for what she and Yolanda do for the community. The Tucson ASG Chapter is lucky to have them both as part of their membership to set a heartfelt example of what outreach is all about.
